CEU Universities (CEU San Pablo (Madrid), CEU Cardenal Herrera (Valencia, Elche y Castellon) y Abat Oliba CEU (Barcelona) – are once again in prominent positions in the different areas of knowledge of the 2021 World University Ranking, developed by Times Higher Education (THE) for over 20 years to assess the quality of university institutions internationally. In this edition of the ranking, in which 1,527 university institutions from 93 countries have participated, CEU Universities stand out among Spanish universities for their sixth global position and are among the top 500 worldwide. But they have also been classified in three specific knowledge areas of the World University Ranking 2020-21: Clinical, pre-clinical & health, Life sciences, and Social sciences, obtaining outstanding results in the two areas of Health and Life Sciences.
First in citations, in the Health area
In the Clinical and Health area (Clinical, pre-clinical & health), CEU Universities rank first among Spanish universities in the number of citations of their researchers, an area in which they are the fourth in Spain, in global terms, and position 201-250 worldwide. In these Health degrees, CEU Universities also stand out for their international orientation and for attracting industry income in terms of teaching and research collaboration, dimensions in which they occupy the sixth and ninth position in the ranking, respectively, among all Spanish universities.
CEU UCH Veterinary, the most international
In the area of Life Sciences, in which CEU Universities have achieved position 501-600 worldwide, the most outstanding results are found within the subsection of Veterinary Medicine, a degree taught by the CEU Cardenal Herrera University in Valencia. In this case, the CEU UCH Degree in Veterinary Medicine occupies the first position among Spanish universities due to its international orientation. The publications of its research professors are the sixth in number of citations and the ninth in income from the industry. In global terms, CEU UCH ranks fifth in this area of knowledge.
Dimensions and evaluation criteria
In the Times Higher Education ranking, university performance by areas of knowledge is assessed through five indicators: the impact of research, income from industry, international orientation, scientific development, and teaching. In each area, these indicators are weighted differently to adapt more adequately to the reality of each field of knowledge.
The data from the THE ranking comes, among other sources, from over 22,000 academic reputation surveys. In terms of research, the THE Ranking analyzes 13.6 million publications and more than 86 million citations for five years, using Elsevier bibliometric data and the Scopus scientific production database.
